Research Interests

Evolution of continental margin batholiths and development of derivative sedimentary basins. Current work in the Peninsular Ranges of southern and Baja California and the Coast Ranges of southern British Columbia is interdisciplinary involving a range of techniques, all rooted in field studies, including U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology of basement rocks, developmental work and application of detrital mineral dating techniques, igneous and metamorphic petrology, as well as stratigraphic analysis of depositional systems.  Both undergraduate and graduate students at SDSU conduct research on these topics under Kimbrough’s supervision, and research results feed into the two graduate level courses he teaches, Geol 660 Isotope Geology and Geol 640 Geotectonics.

Science education and K-8 curriculum development. New curricula is developed and implemented within the framework of an interactive association between the SDSU Department of Geological Sciences, pre-service teacher training program, and K-8 students and in-service teachers from local school districts.  Show Me Geology is the cornerstone of this effort.

Current Projects

Non-steady-state continental margin magmatism:  Large scale partial melting events exert a primary control on the dynamics of orogenic belts and are a fundamental process of continental growth. The Late Cretaceous La Posta TTG suite in the eastern Peninsular Ranges batholith (PRB) of southern and Baja California is an outstanding world class example. La Posta plutons account for ~50% of the total surface area of the 800 km PRB, and were emplaced within a surprisingly brief time interval (~100 to 95 Ma; e.g. Kimbrough et al., 2001). This catastrophic melting/mass transfer event marked the culmination of arc magmatism at the margin of southwestern North America  This intense magmatic flareup was preceded by tectonic shortening and inferred crustal thickening under conditions that may be analogous to the Neogene Cordillera Blanca batholith of Peru.  An array of fundamental questions revolve around La Posta-type magmatism including source region characteristics, triggering mechanisms of melting, as well as the timescale and processes by which magmas are emplaced into the middle and upper crust. Kimbrough together with colleagues and students are actively involved in field and laboratory research efforts at addressing these problems. Work in New Zealand is centered around the TTG-affinity Separation Pt batholith and Western Fiordland Orthogneiss.

Gulf of California-San Andreas plate boundary: The goal of this project, supported by the Petroleum Research Fund, is to advance understanding of the Gulf of California-San Andreas plate boundary system via a provenance study of the Magdelena deep-sea fan located off western Baja California Sur which has no apparent sediment source.  Specifically, we hope to establish a piercing point to constrain the magnitude of "proto-San Andreas" transform motion accommodated in the Pacific continental margin of Baja California between ~13 to 6 million years ago.  A refined understanding of proto-San Andreas borderland offsets bears directly on a series of critical dynamical questions related to continental rifting including plate coupling mechanisms across fossil subduction zones, the possibility of major previously unrecognized pre-6 Ma oblique rifting inside the Gulf of California, and possible mechanisms that could explain the Pacific-North American plate boundary jump into the Gulf of California and consequent transfer of Baja California to the Pacific Plate. This is a collaborative effort with Mexican scientists and students at CICESE and UABC Sur that affords meaningful international experiences for SDSU students involved in the project.

Sediment provenance analysis: This work, funded by the National Science Foundation,  focuses on the fundamental question of how the exhumation history of orogenic systems is preserved in the ancient stratigraphic record, and with what fidelity this history can be extracted from derivative sedimentary successions.  Specifically, we are testing the utility of integrating multiple isotopic techniques (detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, whole rock Nd analyses, and detrital K-feldspar & muscovite 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology) with traditional sedimentologic analyses to assess the dynamic linkage between orogenesis, basin subsidence and resultant sediment dispersal and accumulation in continental margin arc systems.  The combination of  techniques focused on here is particularly sensitive to analysis of relatively deeply exhumed continental margin orogens that are often characterized by pulsed, episodic and/or multistage denudation histories.  The numerical model of Lovera et al. (1999), see below, permits analysis of the interaction of transient magmatic heating and exhumation-related slow cooling on exhumation patterns and is ideally suited for interpretation of thermochronologic data from these settings.

Science Education: Development of spatial and temporal reasoning skills is fundamental to understanding of processes and concepts in the Earth Sciences.  Although spatial-temporal reasoning is perhaps the most basic form of human intelligence, surprisingly little effort has gone into construction of a systematic, developmentally appropriate elementary and middle school curriculum designed to foster higher cognitive skills in this area.  Work here, supported by the National Science Foundation,  is aimed at development of K-8 curriculum that promotes spatial-temporal reasoning skills within the framework of already established Earth Sciences content standards.  One aspect of this effort is development of an Earth Sciences/Astronomy K-8 lesson plan portfolio presented as a series of longitudinal exercises. The curriculum is designed to facilitate teaching topics related to spatial temporal cognitive skills via astronomical observations of the Sun-Earth-Moon system as well as planets and stars. Astronomy is a good vehicle for developing these skills because there are so many “real time” observations that can be made and analyzed.  Students are engaged in conceptual thinking and get experience making observation, modeling, conducting experiments, graphing, and data analysis.

Peninsular Ranges batholith teaching suite: Geologic education is hampered by spatial and temporal inaccessibility; we see only a tiny fraction of rocks that compose the Earth, at a moment "frozen" in time that represents the culmination of thousands or millions of years of Earth processes.  Laboratory exercises that utilize "rock suites" particular to specific modern geologic environments are an important teaching approach that helps to overcome the fragmentary perspective available to us.  The goal of this project is to establish a reference suite of rocks and teaching materials for the Peninsular Ranges batholith; a classic circum-Pacific continental margin batholith segment.  The suite is based on a transect across the northern part of the batholith in the San Diego region where the structure, petrology, and geophysical characteristics of the batholith are particularly well-documented. The PRB suite is being designed as a flexible vehicle that can be used in undergraduate or graduate geology courses, as well as in local K-12 programs for "place-based" earth science education.  The suite consists of 24 rocks including prebatholithic framework rocks, supracrustal volcanic sequences, and major plutonic rock types that capture the evolution and petrologic diversity of the batholith. A virtual field tour of the batholith will be keyed to this suite.
