Remember Burchill's?
(Evening Herald, Frackville Edition, June 21, 1975)   Let's go back to 1955 and recall a little about the George Burchill Lumber Company.
The original company was composed of: George Burchill, President, John L. Habel, William J. Evitts, Richard F. Bevan, George A. Haupt, Jr., and Thomas A. Bevan.
The Burchill building at 6 South Lehigh Avenue where the office and store were located was constructed in 1925 and for many years was occupied by the American Stores Company. In the same year the building known as the H.D. Bob Company (presently Rabins) was built in the record time of forty days from start to finish! The carpenters working for the Burchill Company also built a large playhouse that was used as a float in the Old Home Week Parade. This was made in one day -- another record! The playhouse was used by the Habel children for many years.

Remember Shorty?

Everyone remembers Clair 0. "Shorty" Hostler. What he lacked in stature he made up in heart. This photo was taken in 1956 when "Shorty" took over as the new freight express man doing the hauling in town, succeeding Thomas Watkins who retired. "Shorty" was exalted ruler of the Elks at the time.

Remember Pauline's?

Remember when Pauline's Dress Shop was in town? In 1938, Pauline's Dress Shop operated by Pauline Norbits, opened as a small shop at 50 South Lehigh Avenue, carrying a complete line of ladies ready-to- wear.
Nov. 1951 marked the grand opening of Pauline's bigger and more modern store located at 20 South Lehigh Avenue. This store was managed by Pauline Norbitz and her sister Bella Guzinsky. They were assisted by a clerk, Joan Skurnowicz and a seamstress Mary Houghton.
Sophie's Jewelry Store is now at this location.
