(Evening Herald, Frackville Edition, December 27, 1975)  Mr. Charles Kirelawich first started in business in 1916 at 66 North Railroad Avenue. This is the present site of the Con Guiditis Tavern. He remained here until 1920 when he purchased the building on the east side of North Lehigh Avenue and Spring Streets. This was formerly a two-story hotel owned by Jeremiah (Darby) Foulk. Mr. Kirelawich added a third story and operated a hotel and beer distributing business here until 1939. Dances, card parties and organizational meetings were held here at this time. In 1939, Bill Kirelawich took over this business until 1942 when he entered the service. The building was then taken over and operated by Charles O'Donnell in 1942 and in later years was operated by the Moran family. This is now the location of Giorgio's Pizza House.
In 1924, Mr. Charles Kirelawich bought the two-story building at 64 North Nice Street. In later years he had the third story added to it. This is one of the old historic buildings in town. It was the homestead of Samuel R. Haupt. Stables were located to the rear of this building where the Ace Distributing Company is now located. The Haupt home was built on the corner of Nice and Spring Streets, the stables were, located to the rear of this house and the barns were located on North Second Street. You can now imagine the size of the Samuel R. Haupt homestead.
"The Samuel R. Haupt family settled in Frackville in 1849, He was a carpenter by trade, saved his money and invested every dollar that he could in land of his choice. He was the sole owner of 500 acres of Frackville's choicest land. He established the water works and many other conveniences and utilities." Mr. Samuel R. Haupt, his wife, Ursula, daughter, Susan L, who graduated with the first graduating class of Frackville in 1888 and who was a school teacher in the primary grades at the Nice Street School in 1891, Alice L., Annie M, and son George A. were listed as living at this location in 1900. In 1892 Mr. Haupt operated a general store on this site.
In the early 1900's the Moose Club of Frackville met on the second floor of this building and held dances in the beautiful hardwood ballroom located there. In 1920, Walter Sklaris operated a grocery store on the first floor of this building for many years. In 1937 to 1952 Lillie Dudley and Marty Connors operated a tavern here and Mrs. Margaret Lycoff operated her tavern here until 1956. In the old days beer was five cents a glass and the bar was set up with home made kielbasas and the miner's favorite, smoked raw bacon with onions and rye bread. The stables to the rear of this building were demolished in 1939 and a building was erected where Mr. Charles Kirelawich operated his beer distributing business. The Ace Distributing Company is now located here.
Mr. William Kirelawich was born in Frackville on July 4, 1918. He attended the Frackville Schools and graduated in 1936. He worked for his father for several years and operated the Kirelawich Cafe at 65 North Lehigh Avenue from 1939 until 1942 when he entered the service. In March 1957 he bought the building at 64 North Nice Street from his father, Charles, and still operates the cafe and restaurant there.
Kirelawich's is a favorite meeting place for many residents of town and a reunion place for former residents who return to visit. Bill was married in December 1946 to the former Betty Lang, and they have four children: Beth Ann, a Kutztown College graduate married to Michael Dower and having one child, Michael Jr.; William and Charles, graduates of Salem College, and Robert, attending Salem College.
