(Evening Herald, Frackville Edition, January 31, 1976)  Mr. Andrew B. Spence was one of seven sons born to Alexander and Margaret Spence of Clearfield, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lennox College Academy in Hopkinson, Iowa, in 1917 and enlisted in the United States Navy in June of that year. At the end of World War I he returned to Lennox and after two additional years of college accepted a position with the Delaware County Telephone Company where he worked for seven years. In June 1928, he returned to Clearfield and worked for the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania until October when he was transferred to Reading for a short time and eventually to Frackville where he was an installer-repairman.
In April 1950, he received the title Private Branch Exchange Installer and had given the Bell Company thirty years of service before retiring in 1963. He was very active in town and was instrumental in organizing the Little League Association of which he was treasurer for eleven years. He was a fifty year Mason and was a member of the Eastern Star of Iowa and Worthy Patron of Frackville for twenty-six years. He passed away December 16, 1972.
Mr. Spence was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Spence of 413 West Frack Street, who was born in Frackville and attended the Jefferson School. She recalled Agnes O'Donnell and Bertha Snyder as two of her teachers. She then went to the Lincoln School and graduated in 1922. She attended Moravian College and McCann's School of Business and worked in an office in Philadelphia for several years before returning to Frackville.
While at College she sang with the Bach Choir under the direction of Dr. wolley. This choir was accompanied by the Philadelphia Orchestra and performed at many concerts in the Philadelphia area. In later years she was a member of the Philadelphia Medley Group under the direction of Irene Reynolds Smith. It was during this time she was thrilled to visit with the mother of Nelson Eddy at her apartment in New York City.
Mrs. Spence has always held a great passion for music and has a lovely soprano voice. She has been a member of the Frackville Woman's Club for many years and directed the Chorus of this club with Mrs. Gertrude Tenenholz as the pianist. The first time this group sang in public was on Febraury 14, 1951 at a fashion show conducted by the Frackville Woman's Clubs. She was the musical director for a play "Happiness Ahead" which was presented on May 21, 1952 and presented many concerts of both sacred and secular music in several churches in Frackville and surrounding towns.
She was also a member of the Community Choir of Shenandoah under the direction of Patti Karosas and the Community Choir of Frackville, directed by Virginia Bateman Wilheim. The officers of this group were Harold Speidel, president; Ira Steigerwalt, recording secretary; Dorothy Dyer, attendance secretary; Victor Burchill, treasurer; Adah Speidel and Marion Eisenhower, pianists; Dorothy Guy, organist; Robert Wagner, violinist and Anna Coxon, librarian.
She recalled the Eastern All-State Band Festival held at Frackville on February 3, 1956. 180 schools participated with 187 students. Many residents of town opened their homes to these students and were hosts of the three-day festival. Franklin R. Wolfe was host music instructor and Erik Leidzen of New York City was guest conductor. A banquet was held at the Lutheran Hall for the students and directors and each visitor was presented with a ceramic tray fashioned to represent a 16th note and engraved with "Eastern All State Band, Frackville, Feb. 2 to 4, 1956."
Mrs. Spence realizes the value of preserving the history of our town and its organizations and has an excellent collection of news clippings and photographs of the Frackville Woman's Club and its Chorus. She has served on the Library Board for several years and also as president. She is a member of the united Church of Christ and sings in the Choir.
