Aztecs Wrap Up Season at WIRA Championships
POSTED MONDAY, APR 30 2007 AT 4:14 PM
The San Diego State Aztec Men competed this weekend in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Four Aztec boats competed in the tough weekend of races.

The Novice 4 moved onto the petite finals of the event by placing third in their heat with a time of 7:22.0, beating their rivals from UCI and a boat from Oregon. In the petite final, which was the third race of the day for these five Aztecs, they finished with a time of 7 minutes, 25 seconds, only four seconds behind Loyola Marymont and once again beating UCI.

San Diego State's Varsity 8 boat missed moving on to petite finals by a mere 2.8 seconds. The race was very close as the Aztecs pushed against Humboldt State through the whole race with the Aztecs at one point during a mid-race push pulling ahead by several seats. However, Humboldt State pulled away during the sprint to pull a time of 6:23.5, edging out the Aztecs' 6:25.3 to gain a spot in the petite finals. The Aztecs were finally able to pull it together in this race and held to their 36 stroke per minute rate for the whole race.

Then, in the Varsity 3rd final event on Sunday morning, the Aztecs had another hard race, this time battling against boats from Sonoma State and Lewis & Clark. Also in the race was the crew from Loyola Marymont, who the Aztecs have raced several times this year. The Aztecs again had a good race, holding their rating for most of the race, and holding off Lewis & Clark for the whole race to beat them by 2.1 seconds. In a near repeat of the previous day's race however, Sonoma State managed to stay just off the Aztecs' bow beating the Aztecs' 6:38.5 by 3.2 seconds.

The Novice 8 found themselves stuck in the fastest heat of preliminary competition, where they pulled a time of 6:47.1, struggling to hold with the rest of the pack. The Aztecs, who had to pull a late-in-the-week substitution, moved on to the Novice 3rd final event which was later in the day on Saturday. This caused several people in the boat to have to pull four 2000 meter races within the same day. In this Novice 3rd final event, the Aztecs found themselves battling it out as they came into the sprint. The Aztecs pulled a weekend best time of 6:45.3 and found themselves finishing third in the race, beating crews from Western Washington, Chapman, and UC Santa Barbara, who they lost to by 6 seconds earlier this season.

The final Aztec boat to compete was the Varsity 4. These rowers, having just come out of the varsity eight, fell just shy of a grand final birth with a time of 7:07.8, beating the boat from Loyola Marymont as well as one from Oregon. In the petite final later in the day, the Aztecs, racing for their third time, posted up a time of 7:13.2, nosing out the four from Gonzaga by a mere 0.2 seconds for the third place spot in the race.

This race marked the end of an exciting season for the Aztecs. We would like to thank everyone who made it out to the races for their support, as well as those who have donated their time and money into seeing the program build back up. Until next year, Go AZTECS!!!
