Definitions and proper capitalization:

 

republican --One who believes in a government where the people exercise their sovereignty through elected representatives.

 

Republican--a member of the Republican party

 

democrat--A person who espouses belief in the core principles of democracy--that all power in government is ultimately derived from the will of the people.

 

Democrat--a member of the Democratic Party.

Effect vs. Affect

 

effect.  As a noun, means "result"; as a verb, means "to bring about," "to accomplish" (not to be confused with affect, which means "to influence.")

 

As a noun, often loosely used in perfunctory writing about fashions, music, painting, and other arts:  "an Oriental effect"; "effects in pale green."

 

Usage as a verb--The Senator used his speech as a means to effect a change in the attitudes of his listeners.

 

 

affect.  As a verb, means "to influence"; "to impress"

Usage as a verb--The listeners were affected by the speech given by the Senator.
