Thermes, Jennifer. Sam Bennett's New Shoes. Minneapolis: Carolrhoda, 2005.

Sam Bennett lives on a farm with his parents and four younger brothers. They don't have much, but through the lovely language and the warm illustrations the closeness of the family is portrayed. When the cobbler comes to the farm to make Sam new shoes, naturally he makes them several sizes too big-so Sam's feet have room to grow. As his feet get bigger, we accompany him on various landmark adventures, like helping his father shear the sheep and taking his first trip to town. The farm goes through its seasons, as does Sam. By the time he's ready to hand his shoes down to the next brother in line, he's ready for the sturdy boots of a young man.
I recommend this affectionate book; it's a good story and the watercolor and ink illustrations glow.
