Collard, Sneed B. III Beaks! Illus. Robin Brickman. Watertown , MA : Charlesbridge, 2002. ISBN 1-57091-388-9. $6.95.

How do birds make do without hands? They have beaks, and beaks are celebrated in this gloriously colorful and fascinating book. By the time you're a few pages in, you'll be dazzled by the kinds, shapes, and purposes of beaks. Collard's prose is crisp, and the facts he presents are catchy. Brickman's art-water-color and collage that seems tactilely dimensional and very real-is more than worth the price of the paperback.or hardback.

A. Allison, June 2006
