Cleary, Brian P. Rhyme and PUNishment: Adventures in Wordplay. Illus. J.P. Sandy. Minneapolis : Millbrook, 2006. ISBN 1-57505-849-9. $15.95.

Neither fiction nor non, puns and nonsense poems here are mixed into a fine brew-haha. Give this book to someone of any age who loves language and has a good sense of humor (they usually go together). Cleary has written the puns up as topical poems on, e.g. food, travel, music and provides an introduction to puns, websites, and additional reading. His puns are original and imaginative:

"U.S. me how's your singing,"
said Aunt Anna as I bowed.
"JUNEAU , my boy, you SINGAPORE,
but my, you sure sing loud."

The cartoonish, lively art by J.P. Sandy is printed on different colored paper for each section, adding to the book's considerable élan.

A. Allison, June 2006
