Barrett, Tracy. Cold in Summer. New York: Henry Holt, 2003. ISBN 0-8050-7052-4. PZ7.B275355 Hard back, 203 pp.

Adriane is forced to move from Florida to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere when her mother accepts a new position in Tennessee. Just when she feels most out of place and lonely, Adriane meets a peculiar stranger her age, wearing old-fashioned dress and with a startling habit of appearing and disappearing announced. In their lonesomeness, the two girls connect, but May needs Adriane's help. And as alarming details begin to amass, Adriane wonders whether her friendship with a girl whom no one else sees or hears is worth the risks. Cold in Summer is a contemporary ghost story about a brave girl, the necessity of friendships and a discovery of a new home.

Alexandra Bashkatova, January 2004
