Vejjajiva, Jane. The Happiness of Kati. Trans. Prudence Borthwick. Aus: Allen and Unwin, 2006. ISBN 974-94312-0-0.

This powerful, beautifully-written book begins with a mystery and ends with a key character's death from cancer, so be aware of the plot. That said, with remarkable sensitivity the author and translator see the situation from the young daughter's eyes. Mother isn't there the first several chapters; she is away seeking remission. Kati is living with affectionate grandparents away from the capital, Bangkok . When treatment fails, Mother and daughter re-unite for the mother's last weeks. The story doesn't shy away from showing the family burdened and then grieving, but there are moments of relief and laughter, just as there would be in real life. The characters continue beyond her death to some happier times. The setting in Thailand is fascinating; the author spends time on description that allows for a break in intensity. Notably, the family is wealthy and accomplished, so money for treatment or accommodation isn't a factor. The author can focus on the tightly knit family and the comfort Kati both gets and gives.

A. Allison, October 2006
