Yona Zeldis McDonough, illustrated by Diane Palmisciano. The Dollhouse Magic. New York: Holt, 2000. 80 pp. ISBN 0-8050-6464-8. $ 15.00.

Two sisters see a luxurious dollhouse in a window of a house they pass on the way from school. One day, they meet the owner of the house, an nice spinster who allows them to come and play with the dollhouse. A month later she suddenly dies and leaves the girls the coveted dollhouse in her will (which she apparently with amazing foresight has changed in between).

"So," you may wonder, "what happened next?" Nothing. This is the whole book. Soppy and devoid of any charm. The author's attempt to give the story a social thrust by placing it during Depression only makes it still more pointless.
