McCaughrean, Geraldine. Starry Tales. Illus. Sophie Williams. NY: McElderry (S&S), 1998. $21. ISBN 0-689-83015-7.

Another fine collection by Kingfisher, with stories this time for older readers than in the book above. Each of these fifteen tales chosen and retold well by McCaughrean is related to stars, the sun, and/or the moon, an aesthetically-pleasing theme. McCaughrean’s sources are global: Sierra Leone, Peru, China, Rome, Greece, Afghanistan, Guatemala, and so on, contributing to a richly diverse book. Williams’ artwork is very fine, stable and comforting as on p.99, full of graceful movement on p. 21, or dynamic as on p. 76. Starry Tales is one of several books by McCaughrean and Williams anthologizing myths and legends and published by McElderry.

A. Allison, October 2004
