Downey, Lynn. Illustrated by Karla Firehammer. The Flea's Sneeze. New York: Henry Holt, 2000. ISBN 0-8050-6103-7. $17.

Vivaciously illustrated and imaginatively told, this rhyming book with its refrain of "but not the flea" depicts the humorous havoc in the otherwise peaceful nighttime barn when the sleepless flea sneezes. He not only wakes the others, but passes his cold to the hapless hog. Downey's use of rhyme results in a frolicking cadence and repetition lends itself to youngsters' memorizing the tale quickly and joining in. A good choice not only for families but for classrooms and library story hours.
