Crispin, Avi. The Cross of Lead. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2002. $15.99. ISBN 0-7868-1647-9.

Winner of the Newbery Medal this year, Crispin, Cross of Lead takes readers to a story set in the place and time and amidst the characters of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. A boy living in fourteenth century England who believes he is nothing gains self-esteem when he pairs up with a traveling juggler who makes the boy his apprentice. The first person narrative allows this suspenseful rags-to-riches story to unfold through the eyes of Crispin, who learns his true identity is one of nobility. Reminiscent of Mark Twain's The Prince and The Pauper, this story takes a new twist as Crispin's decision to claim love over power and position leads him to joy.

Highly recommended.
