Creech, Sharon. Ruby Holler. New York: HarperCollins, 2002. $16.89. ISBN 0-06-027732-7.

In Ruby Holler, Sharon Creech, winner of the Newbery Medal for Walk Two Moons, introduces readers to twin brother and sister, Dallas and Florida. The orphans suffer much abuse and neglect in putrid foster homes. Tiller and Sairy, a kind, older, married couple, take the twins to live with them at their country home, Ruby Holler. The twins make so many mistakes they nearly destroy Ruby Holler, but they do learn to trust Tiller and Sairy. Along they way, the children remind Tiller and Sairy and readers of the wonder in nature. The subtle role of trees, rocks, and creatures emphasizes a familiar Creech theme that the human relationship with the natural environment is healing to young and old. As in she did in Two Moons, Creech once again reminds us to look for hope in a frightening world. She reprises the theme of romance in the lifelong companionship of married couples.

Highly recommended.
