Global Experience Program
The College of Business Administration offers a Global Experience Program Certificate for business majors.  The Global Business Certificate (GEP) offer students an opportunity to combine international experience, academic study, service learning, internships and personal reflection toward the following goals:

  • Achieve some degree of competency in the language appropriate to Study Abroad experience.
  • Explain the difference between a domestic and international view of discipline and career of choice.
  • Identify international entry-level and career opportunities.
  • Model increased independence and self-awareness.
  • Portray state-of-the-planet awareness.
  • Gather knowledge about culture in general in addition to specific knowledge of host culture(s).

Each student in the GEP will be advised by the CBA Study Abroad program Director or Coordinator (GEP Advisors).  The GEP advisor will work with the student to develop a learning plan and to review progress toward completion of certificate requirements.  The student’s GEP Advisor and a sponsoring faculty member from the student’s major department will review the learning plan to approve admission to the program and to review the portfolio required for completion. 

Requirements for Admissions to GEP:

  1. Declared Pre-Business or Upper Division Business Major
  2. Submission of an application to the Business Advising Center, GEP Advisor: EBA-448
  3. Minimum 2.5 SDSU and Overall GPA

Requirements to fulfill CBA Global Experience Program Certificate (GEP):

  • Approval of an individualized Learning Plan

Before beginning the components of the Global Experience Program Certificate each student must attend a GEP Learning Plan Workshop, submit a Learning Plan to the GEP Advisor and faculty sponsor for review and have the Learning Plan approved. 

  • GEP Workshops:

Attendance at a series of workshops is required throughout the GEP Program. These workshops are intended to promote critical thinking and integrate the student’s international experiences.  These workshops are designed to provide guidance and reflection during all GEP activities. These workshops will include the following topics:

    • Development of an individualized “learning plan.”1 Will include portfolio guidelines
    • Global Career Skills
    • Pre-departure Career-Related
    • Re-entry Career-Related
    • Pre-community service reflection
    • Post-community service reflection
  • International Experience Outside of USA:

Completion of one or more of the following: study, internship, or volunteer work in another country for a minimum of 3 months. A GEP participant’s Learning Plan must be approved prior to the international experience.

    • Study abroad at one of the recommended and/or approved programs by CBA
    • Complete an internship abroad (student may choose a program)
    • Participate in a service learning program abroad (student may choose a program)
  • Academic Requirement:

Completion of language, humanities, social sciences, and business course components. Between 15-22 units must be completed (language courses may be taken at an approved transfer institution; upper division Humanities, Social Science or Business may be taken abroad or at SDSU; some courses may be part of student’s General Education requirement). Courses taken only to meet GEP requirements may be taken for credit/no credit. At least four of these courses must be completed after being admitted to the GEP program.

    • Language: two foreign language college level courses (i.e., non English). Both courses must be in the same language and should be related to student’s international experience. Students who study abroad in an English-speaking country need to complete this requirement in a language approved by a GEP adviser.
    • Humanities: one upper division (300 level and above) multicultural, or international course with a cultural diversity theme chosen from an approved list.
    • Social Science: Communication 371 Intercultural Communication.
    • Business Courses: two upper division international business courses (300 level and above), chosen in consultation with the GEP Advisor.  Students may use these courses to satisfy a major requirement in business, if they are from the list of approved courses.
    • Business Professions: Management 202
  • Activities and Service:

Completion of a total of 150 hours of co-curricular activities.  Student must complete a minimum of 150 hours of activities and service with a strong multicultural, diversity, or international theme.  One must be an Intercultural Co-Curricular Activity and one must be an Intercultural Service Learning Activity. All activities must be pre-approved by a GEP Advisor. 

    • Intercultural Co-Curricular Activity: student must complete activities for a minimum of 50 hours.
    • Intercultural Service Learning Activity: Student must complete activities for a minimum of 100 hours. This component will involve participation in community service activities that are directly relevant to the goals of the GEP.
  • Portfolio:

This requirement includes the completion of a portfolio which will encompass evidence of all of the students’ experiences in the GEP program plus assigned reflections addressing the program’s student learning outcomes and the student’s mastery of them.  The student’s GEP Advisor and sponsoring faculty member must review and approve the portfolio as a requirement of successful program completion.

  • GPA:

Minimum 2.5 SDSU and overall GPA

The GEP Certificate and transcript will be awarded upon successful completion of all the requirements.

The “learning plan” is an individualized plan describing how each student will specifically meet the learning goals and satisfy the objectives/criteria set by an GEP Advisor and a sponsoring faculty in the department of the student’s major. It serves as a ‘contract’ of sorts between the student, the adviser, and the faculty member. Each plan will be developed utilizing the student’s current strengths, and learning needs and the specific expectations of the GEP advisor and major faculty with respect to expected student learning outcomes in the Global Experience Program Certificate.
