Sports MBA Class of 2008 Graduates at PETCO Park
On Saturday, May 31, 2008, the SDSU Sports MBA Class of 2008 received their Master of Business Administration degrees in a ceremony held at PETCO Park, home of Sports MBA Program partners, the San Diego Padres.

This year, for the first time, the ceremony was held inside the ballpark, with the first base dugout serving as the “stage” for the ceremony.  The stadium’s field and scoreboard served as a fitting backdrop for the occasion, and both provided spectators with a stunning visual as they participated in the ceremony.

After a greeting from dignitaries including the Dean of the College of Business Administration, Dr. Gail Naughton, and the Padres Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Katie Pothier, the graduates were treated to a commencement address from Padres General Manager, Kevin Towers.  Mr. Towers, currently the longest-tenured GM in Major League Baseball, discussed his career path from a scout to the front office, and offered the graduating class some valuable insight.  He advised the graduates to continue to follow their passion for sports and to rely on this passion to find success in the sports industry.

Following Mr. Towers’ keynote speech, students heard from Class of 2008 valedictorian Brent LeVasseur (SMBA ’08) and salutatorian Matthew Balvanz (SMBA ’08).  Graduate Stephanie Ong (SMBA ’08) presented the Outstanding Sports MBA Faculty award to Dr. Gangaram Singh, his second award in three years of teaching in the program.  Andrew Schwindt (SMBA ’08) presented the award for Sports MBA Alumnus of the Year to Stephen Gera (SMBA ’07), who is currently a Coaches Assistant and Football Analyst with the San Diego Chargers.

The SDSU Sports MBA program, its faculty, staff, and alumni salute the Class of 2008 on their tremendous accomplishment, and wish to thank the San Diego Padres for their generosity in hosting this annual event at beautiful PETCO Park.
