Stem cell research was the topic for the second of the Executive M.B.A. (EMBA) Distinguished Lecture Series held Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at the Aztec Athletic Center. Three experts in the field, Dr. Gail Naughton (dean of SDSU College of Business Administration and CEO of Histogen Inc.), Dr. Samuel Wood (EMBA alumnus and CEO of Stemagen) and Dr. Brian Pollok (Chief Scientific Officer of Life Technologies), discussed progress made in the field of stem cell research and overall business outlook for the industry. All three panelists discussed the high costs of developing technology as it enters the final phase of the F.D.A. approval process – up to $1 billion, according to Dr. Naughton. They also discussed how the U.K. is currently the leader in the field of regenerative medicine and how prohibitive costs have slowed the progress of stem cell research in the U.S. Histogen uses adult stem cells to regenerate hair growth, Stemagen clones embryonic stem cells for therapeutic use, and Life Technologies develops gene cloning technologies.
