SDSU’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program recently operated a no-charge tax preparation service February 10 through April 11 which they assisted middle- and low-income taxpayers ($50,000 and below) file their tax returns.
The volunteers consisted of SDSU undergraduate and graduate accounting students that have been certified by the IRS to prepare all federal and California state income tax returns. Student volunteers, who gained valuable real-world experience from working with actual clients, filed the completed returns both by mail and electronically.
This year, 390 tax returns were prepared by the VITA volunteers – nearly double the number prepared in 2007. The clients consisted of both SDSU students and members of the San Diego community.

Katherine Swasey gets tax preparation assistance from SDSU students Sara Hernandez, Courtney Dorner and Louisan Raphael.
