Alumni Spotlight:
Art Flaming
Art Flaming (’60 marketing) has always played to win. Whether it was on the baseball field, in business or in life, Flaming has worked hard to excel. “I’ve always had drive – you’ve got to follow through and you’ve got to be on time,” he said.
A native San Diegan, Flaming played baseball and football at Kearny High, then attended Brigham Young University on a baseball scholarship upon graduation. After he was at BYU for one year, he got a call from SDSU baseball coach, Charlie Smith, who asked him to try out with the Aztecs as a catcher.
Flaming made the team and he also made a friend in Smith, whom he called a “terrific mentor and father figure” who encouraged good behavior, community service and high grades (you had to maintain at least a B average to stay on the team). In 1958, Flaming was team captain when the Aztecs won their first and only NAIA Championship.
Upon graduation from SDSU in 1960, Flaming embarked upon a career in mortgage banking and real estate. While working at the John Burnham Company in 1981, he established his first self storage company. This eventually became a full-time job, so he left Burnham to found his own company, Tierra Corporation. Tierra Corporation specializes in development and management of self-storage companies. Currently, Tierra runs 35 self-storage units throughout California and Arizona.
But even as he built his business, Flaming’s heart stayed with SDSU. He served as president of the Alumni Association; helped to establish the first SDSU credit card through MBNA; has given many hours to the university as a volunteer; and donated $500,000 toward the new SDSU Alumni Association building where the Art and Gwen Flaming Alumni Association Wing will be established.
In 2006, Flaming was honored with the Monty, SDSU’s highest alumni award. But he is not the only CBA alumni in the family: All three of Flaming’s children, Scott, Darryl and Kristin, graduated with business degrees from SDSU.
Flaming’s advice to today’s students? “Be patient. Rewards may come later and good things may happen to you. Go to class and get good grades. Also, be proactive and don’t live in the past.” |
