Two CBA Students Honored at the Student Research Symposium

CBA graduate students Jolene Weston and Jade Smith were honored for their research studies at SDSU’s Student Research Symposium, held March 1, 2008. Both students received a $250 award for their winning studies.

Jolene

Weston’s research, entitled College Students: The New Face of Problem Gambling? Gambling Behavior and Prevalence Among San Diego State Students examined whether the close proximity of the nine Indian gaming venues within a 20 mile radius of the campus had an effect on student gambling behavior. The study concluded that SDSU students did have higher rates of problem and pathological gambling than other students studied at universities throughout the U.S. and Canada. The study also found that SDSU health services did not provide resources to students dealing with gambling addictions.

Jade

Smith’s research dealt with the societal impact of the use of performance enhancing drugs by professional athletes in her study entitled Integrity: Major League Baseball and Steroid Use. In the study, Smith outlines how her research has shown that media coverage on professional athletes’ use of performance enhancing drugs has negatively affected America’s youth due to the increasing number of youngsters found taking steroids. The study also reports that Major League Baseball appears in the media to have the greatest deal of difficulty controlling their players’ use of banned substances. In conclusion, Smith asks: what can be done to restore baseball’s integrity?

Weston earned her M.S.B.A. in marketing in December, 2007 and Smith is scheduled to earn her sports management M.B.A. in the spring of 2009.
