Dr. Marie Flatley, a professor of Information and Decision Systems (IDS), was recognized as a 2007-2008 SDSU TechStar by other SDSU faculty for her innovating teaching style. The TechStar rewards faculty efforts in the use of teaching and learning technologies and recognizes innovative and creative use of the Blackboard Learning Management System. TechStars facilitate active learning using technologies which promote communication and interaction. Dr. Flatley’s contributions have inspired other faculty at SDSU to engage students in effective learning through technology-rich projects.
Flatley provides an opportunity for her IDS 396W students to engage in collaborative virtual presentations. This assignment shows one way that SDSU faculty can help out students develop important workplace skills at the same time that students are building content area knowledge.
“When I started teaching we talked about written and oral communication channels, now business people have the additional choices of email, blogs, text messaging, and even IM for their communication needs. And they are using all these channels anywhere/anytime,” said Flatley.
