SDSU Students Compete in Challenge X
SDSU marketing students competed in the national Challenge X Competition where groups of students competed to create a clean-burning, fuel efficient vehicle without sacrificing performance or utility. The four-year project, sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy, saw vehicles from 17 universities across the country tested at various locations throughout the United States. The challenge concluded in Washington, D.C. on May 21.
In the fall of 2004, each university was given a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. Students from SDSU’s College of Engineering redesigned the 6-speed manual transmission vehicle to run on B20 bio diesel fuel . The vehicle, re-named the “Frequinox” was able to achieve 0 – 60 miles per hour in 5 seconds and also got 30 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent.
While the Frequinox did not win the overall competition, SDSU marketing professor and team faculty advisor, Dr. Mickey Belch, said the team did win the award for “Best AVL Drive Quality” last year and received numerous second and third place awards this year.
