SDSU Hosts International Economic Summit with High School Students from Mexico and San Diego
San Diego State University Center for International Business Education and Research (SDSU CIBER) will host the second annual International Economic Summit (IES) on Tuesday, May 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Montezuma Hall on the campus of SDSU.
Approximately 400 high school students from San Diego County and Baja California, Mexico will compete in a world trade simulation of 69 countries to implement their global economic plans. The students have spent an entire semester researching the social, political, and economic conditions of a specific country in order to create a strategic plan to improve the standard of living for their assigned country. At the all-day conference, the students will present their specific strategies, and implement their plans through a variety of activities such as alliance negotiations, trade issue debates, and an energizing trade session.
The IES program is designed to educate students about essential economic concepts and the benefits of trade, while exploring the controversies associated with globalization. Utilizing the experience-based learning model, the program challenges students to think critically about the benefits and costs of trade and to explore the multifaceted process of globalization.
SDSU CIBER is a co-sponsor of the event, along with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Financial support for the event comes from Sempra Energy, through its partnership with the SDSU College of Business Administration.
