China Is Focus of 2007 Invitrogen Distinguished Lecture Series

(l to r): Invitrogen CEO Greg Lucier, CBA Dean Gail Naughton,
Distinguished Lecturer Zhu Chen, Science Dean Stanley Malloy
and President Stephen Weber.
The Invitrogen Distinguished Lecture Series featured Zhu Chen, Ph.D, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chen will speak on “Opportunities and Challenges for Life Science and Biotechnology in China” from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar.
Dr. Chen has made important discoveries in the molecular foundations of several types of human leukemia and was recently named as one of the coordinators for the Human Genome Project in China. He has received numerous awards for science and technology throughout his career, including the Second Degree National Award for Science and Technology, Third Degree Award of National Sciences and the First Degree Award of the National Ministry of Public Health.
In 2004, Invitrogen Corporation joined with SDSU to establish the first joint Ph.D.-MBA program in the nation that focuses both degrees in the life sciences and features direct involvement with biotech companies. “One of the biggest challenges in our industry is attracting candidates who have the skill to envision functional applications for cutting edge research,” said Lucier. “The types of candidates that companies such as ours seek out are those who will make a tangible impact on improving the human condition. The Ph.D.-MBA program is a positive step in training skilled scientists to become the business leaders of tomorrow.”
