U.S. Navy Partners with CBA on Middle East Port Project

The U.S. Navy’s leadership role in port sustainability was highlighted at a June 15 workshop in Aqaba, Jordan sponsored by the Fred J. Hansen Institute for World Peace and organized by CBA faculty member Marc Siegel.  The workshop brought together American allies in the Middle East to protect the sensitive ecosystems in the Gulf of Aqaba and Red Sea.

U.S. leadership, including Admiral Hering, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Environment), and White House Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, supported this project. "The Navy’s support was a great opportunity to provide leadership to this initiative while promoting the Navy's sustainability best practices to port operations" said Hurt.  “We believe that this effort will support our mutual goals in promoting stewardship and positive cooperation," said Siegel.

Development of the region requires an environmentally sustainable approach due to the fact that the environmental resources of the area play an integral part in attracting investment and development in the areas of tourism, industry, port services, and other infrastructure. Therefore, sustainable development can only be achieved through a partnership to prevent the deterioration and pollution of the unique environment of the region.

On Saturday, June 17, the Sports Business MBA Program held its first graduation at PETCO Park. SDSU alum, veteran sports journalist and eight-time Emmy Award winner Armen Keteyian served as keynote speaker, along with Padres representative and CEO Sandy Alderson.

The Sports Business Management MBA program, in just its first year of existence, has established itself among the elite sports-focused MBA programs in the nation. This is the only program in the nation partnered with a major league team: the San Diego Padres.

“One of the greatest parts of the Sports MBA program was the condensed schedule,” said Jill Stephenson, who graduated in June. “I was able to complete all of my class work in one year and get right back into the workforce. I feel that now I have the right combination of work experience and educational experience to give me an advantage in the competitive environment of sports.”

One of the primary components of the program is the students' internships with local, national and international organizations. These companies have included the Boston Red Sox, Major League Baseball, IMG and the U.S. Olympic Training Center. “The business concepts that I learned in SDSU's program were used on a day-to-day basis during my internship, such as player valuation and the ability to deconstruct the framework of collective bargaining,” said Jack Tipton, who interned in Major League Baseball's Labor Relations Department. “The [department] has proven to be a tremendous starting point for future top executives in the game. Breaking into the business of baseball is extremely difficult, but SDSU's curriculum and internship placement has given me every opportunity to achieve my dream."

Author/ SDSU Alum Visits Campus to Motivate Students

Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional co-ed business fraternity, hosted Brian Souza, author of a new book entitled Become Who You Were Born to Be on Thursday, September 14.

Souza, who graduated with a degree in international business in 1997, is one of three in his family to have attended SDSU. Today, he is the founder and chairman of Paragon Holdings, LLC, an organization which specializes in teaching personal and organizational success worldwide. Souza is widely recognized as one of the leading experts in the field of sales and personal achievement.

“More than anything I think my experience at SDSU taught me that the only limits on my potential to succeed were those I chose to place upon myself. Working three jobs while maintaining a full class load taught me that with self discipline, passion, commitment, determination, and patience, anything in life is possible,” Souza said. “And besides, who would have thought that an average student who could barely write a 20-page term paper for Prof. DeNoble's class would one day write a bestselling book for Random House?”

His new book, Become Who You Were Born to Be: We All Have a Gift Have You Discovered Yours?, will be the lead title for Random House in the spring of 2007. Vice President and Publisher of Harmony and Shaye Areheart Books Shaye Areheart said, “We have every confidence that Souza's message and his exciting new book will transform the way all of us conceive of our purpose, our goals, and how to achieve true and lasting fulfillment through our life's work.”
