2nd Annual MBA/MSBA Alumni Golf Tournament

The Graduate Business Student Association (GBSA) is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual MBA/MSBA Alumni Golf Tournament, which will take place on Friday, June 16th at Riverwalk Golf Club, 1150 Fashion Valley Road. Your contributions and participation will not only provide a day of excellent networking opportunities and lots of fun, but also support current and future graduate business students at SDSU. Registration begins at 11:30; shotgun start is 1:00 p.m.

The funds raised from this event will be donated to the College of Business to benefit graduate business students through career development programs, job placement for students, and business alumni networking opportunities.

Sign up as a team or sign up individually; all individuals will be placed into a foursome. GBSA will be awarding a $30,000 cash prize (and maybe even a car) to anyone who makes a hole-in-one on the target hole.  We encourage you to start practicing that swing and to sign up soon.  Space is limited!  If you do not play golf, you can also register as a non-golfer for the networking/dinner buffet reception portion of the event, which will begin around 5:30pm. The registration deadline is June 1st.

GBSA welcomes your participation as we work to continue the tradition of excellence that SDSU alumni, students and friends bring to the community. Please go to the website below for more information, sponsorship opportunities and to register for the tournament:  http://gbsa.sdsu.edu/events.html.

Institute for Athletes in Retirement and Transition Hosts Conference

The Institute for Athletes in Retirement and Transition (IART) will be hosting its first conference: “Life After Sport – Athletes in Transition” on June 2-4 on the SDSU campus. The conference will be attended by local and national retired professional athletes, interested sport business professionals and academic researchers. The cost is $185 and the event is open to the public. For more information visit: www.sdsu.edu/iart.

The conference will feature workshops being conducted by academics, doctors and retired professional athletes from around the U.S., including one from Scotland. Workshops include such topics as: Coaches Career Development and Transition; Who am I Now?: Rediscovering your Identity Following Sport Career Termination; Deconstructing An Athletic Career: Success, Pain, Injury and Disengagement; and Meaningfully Transforming the Retirement Experience: The Moral Responsibility of Athletic Communities. Steve Scott, one of the first inductees to the Track and Field Hall of Fame and considered to be one of the greatest mile runners in history, will be the event’s keynote speaker.

The IART was developed to support retired collegiate, elite and professional athletes through various programs, including research and publications, mentoring, advising and nationwide networking. Conceived by Scott Tinley, a former professional athlete and current instructor in SDSU’s Sports Management MBA Program, the program will enlist the support of teams, leagues, complimentary organizations, as well as individuals and groups in providing assistance to athletes who require this highly specialized form of guidance in their retirement.

“For every former professional athlete that leaves the world of sport with some degree of stability, there are hundreds, at all levels of sport, that suffer through the idiosyncrasies of emotional trauma connected to major life change,” said Tinley. “This group has identified a unique sub-culture of men and women who could benefit from the services of this institute. Beyond that, research opportunities transcend sport retirement and should be applicable to many of society’s challenging life transitions.”
