SDSU CBA Student Wins CSU Student Research Competition

On May 5 and 6, 10 students represented SDSU at the CSU Student Research Competition held at CSU Channel Islands. The students competed in eight of the 22 research categories available at the event. The competition was strong and jurors were relentless in their questions. In the end, their tremendous efforts produced four first place awards and one 1st runner-up award from SDSU.

One of the first place awards in the category of Business, Economics, and Public Administration went to MBA student Roy Segovia for his paper titled, “The Use of Paralingual Web Pages on E-Government Web Sites to Improve Trust in Government in Areas of Highly Bilingual Population.” Segovia's mentor for the competition was IDS Professor Murray Jennex.

Accountancy Spring Awards Banquet

The Spring Awards Banquet for the School of Accountancy was held on Friday, April 21 at the Hilton Mission Valley. During the evening, 19 School of Accountancy scholarship recipients and 21 donors were honored.

Special guest speaker for the event was Barry Salzberg, the managing partner of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, one of the nation's leading professional services organizations providing audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services through nearly 30,000 people in more than 90 cities in the United States.
 
In his role as U.S. Managing Partner, Salzberg serves as Chairman of the Deloitte U.S. Firms’ Executive Committee and oversees the management of the organization’s four businesses and operating infrastructure, including human resources and shared services.  He also is a member of the Deloitte U.S. Firms’ Board of Directors.

“We were honored to have such a high-ranking accountancy executive like Mr. Salzberg travel to San Diego to speak to the students, faculty and professionals,” School of Accountancy Director Sharon Lightner said. “This has set a high bar for future banquets.”

Students Place Third in Int'l Business Strategy Competition

The SDSU team placed third in this years 42nd annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition in San Diego. Based upon The Business Policy Game: An International Strategy Simulation, a total of 30 teams from three continents competed in the event, which features teams running mock manufacturing companies required to respond to real-world business dilemmas. Senior executives from Cisco Systems, Ernst & Young and other firms judged the teams. SDSU was in a “World” with teams from Dubai Men's College, Sharjah Men's College (also from the Emirates), Oklahoma Christian University, San Jose State, and USD. The team consisted of students Lance Schaefer, Amber Horton, Chris Farnsway, Rebecca Tall and Jay Montenegro. Management professor Michael Hergert served as team advisor.
