James Beatty, IDS Professor, served as one of the six national judges for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Affairs has a Baldrige program entitled the Carey Awards, which uses the Baldrige Criteria to evaluate all of their hospitals and related affiliates. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs’ Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award is an annual award sponsored by the Secretary of the Veterans Affairs. This award recognizes organizations that have implemented management approaches that result in sustained high levels of performance and service to the veterans being served.
Carmen Bianchi, founder of the EMC Business Forum, has been elected as president of the Family Firm Institute (FFI). Bianchi was announced as president at the FFI’s annual conference on Oct. 25-28 in San Francisco. Her term as president at FFI will consist of one year as president elect, two years as president, and one year as ex-officio. Bianchi has been a family business consultant since 1991. Her expertise lies in family systems and the relationship between family, business ownership and the professional roles within a family firm. She teaches the MBA program at SDSU on Family Business Management and she is also the principal of Carmal & Associates; a family business consulting firm.
Bianchi has been in involved with the FFI for 17 years and has held many positions within the organization. She has been a presenter and panelist at most of FFI’s annual conferences and has also written proceedings for the conferences. At this year’s conference, Bianchi presented on family business education, university-based family business centers and the success of family councils. The FFI is the premier organization in the U.S. for professionals specializing in family business.

Chee Chow, accounting professor; Kamal Haddad, finance professor; Gangaram Singh, management professor and chair; and Anne Wu of Taiwan's National Chengchi University, were recently awarded the Vernon Zimmerman Best Paper Award for their paper "How Well Can Publication of an Article in a Top Accounting Journal be Used as a Proxy for its Contribution?" They received their award at the 18th annual Asia-Pacific Conference on International Accounting Issues held on Oct. 15-18 in Hawaii.
Paul Graf, J.D., has been named associate director for finance and law at SDSU’s Corporate Governance Institute (CGI). Graf, an assistant professor for finance in the CBA, will act as the Institute’s liaison and ambassador with the legal and finance academies, helping to encourage and direct corporate governance research and to build a global network of corporate governance scholars. He will also serve as a resource to the San Diego community on issues related to corporate governance law. Graf has been adjunct faculty in the MBA for Executives program (EMBA) and undergraduate business law area since 2002. Graf will offer the EMBA program’s first Corporate Governance course in tandem with CGI Director Lori Ryan in May 2007.
Jeff Glazer, management lecturer, recently completed a two year term as President of the Board of Directors of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC), Jacobs Family campus. He was honored with the organization’s highest award, the David K. Kroll Leadership Award. During his presidency, he achieved a break-even budget for the past fiscal year, increased the agencies budget, increased the number of donors and much more. He has served on their executive board since 1992 and has is continually giving his support and commitment to the JCC.
Murray Jennex, Assistant IDS Professor, has a new book titled Knowledge Management in Modern Organizations, being released in December/January. He also is presenting at multiple upcoming conferences: as the keynote speaker at the Australian Conference on Knowledge Management and Intelligent Decision Systems in Australia; at the Defining Knowledge Management Success Conference in the Netherlands; and at Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences in Hawaii.
Davette Kawachi, formerly the administrative support coordinator in the School of Accountancy’s IDS department, has taken the position as budget analyst for external programs in the CBA. In her new position, Kawachi is responsible for the financial aspects of all external programs in the CBA. She will be working closely with Yolanda Anglin and Karen Courtney. Kawachi has been with the CBA since June 2005.
Dean Gail Naughton, and Carmen Bianchi, director of the Family Business Forum, were both honored by the San Diego Business Journal as 2006 Women Who Mean Business. The awards were given based on the women’s accomplishments in their profession, in their careers and in the community. Twenty-five women were honored with the award on Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center.
Amy Randel, Assistant Professor of Management, received an Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. She received the award for her feedback on manuscripts she reviewed for their national conference.
Wayne Ridge, information technology consultant, recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary with the CBA. Before joining the CBA, Wayne worked for General Dynamics and served 20 years in the Navy. Wayne maintains and upgrades the computers for both faculty and staff for all five departments in the CBA. His supervisor, Deb Tomic, said “The College is fortunate to have an employee the caliber of Wayne on its staff. Wayne is very tenacious, once he encounters a problem, he won't let go of it until he finds a solution. We all owe him a great deal of thanks for his dedication and hard work.”
Gangaram Singh, chair of the management department, has recently joined the editorial board of the Journal of Organizational Behavior. As an Editorial Board Member he will serve a two year term and is expected to solicit at least one article per year for consideration of publication in the journal, provide advice and editorial support to the senior editorial team, and undertake up to eight reviews per annum.

Sarah Knefler, Finance, Management, Marketing
Sarah Knefler, a former CBA employee is returning as an administrative support assistant II in the finance, management and marketing department. Sarah began with the CBA in 2000 as a student assistant in the Dean’s Office; from there she went to the finance, management and marketing department for four years. She is currently working on her MA at SDSU in educational leadership with a specialization in post-secondary education and student affairs.
