Chung-Herrera Publishes Journal Articles; named Interim Director of Research at Sycuan
Management professor Beth Chung-Herrera has had an article published in The Journal of Applied Social Psychology, vol. 35, titled “Are we there yet? An assessment of fit between stereotypes of minority managers and the successful manager prototype.” She has also had an article accepted at the Journal of Services Marketing, titled “Customers’ Psychological Needs in Different Service Industries.”
In addition to her published works, Chung-Herrera has also been named Interim Director for Research at the Sycuan Institute for Tribal Gaming.
Faculty Recipients of University Grants
Four faculty members are recipients of university grants for their research activities. Three grant programs exist within SDSU, including Research Scholarship Creative Activity (RSCA), Faculty Development Program (FDP) and Grant-in-Aid (GIA). Applications for grant funding within these programs is highly competitive across all colleges within the university. The four faculty recipients are: Heather Honea (Marketing), who received a grant from the FDP for her project “Fantasizing About Winning: Understanding Consumer Response to Games of Chance”; Victoria Krivogorsky (Accountancy) was funded by the RSCA for “Interaction Effects of Country Specific Characteristics and Internal Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Profitability”; Kuntara Pukthuanthong (Finance) received funding from all three programs for “Underwriter Reputation and Closely Held IPOs: Lessons for Family-Controlled Firms from Global Perspectives; and Chamu Sundaramurthy (Management) was funded from both RSCA and GIA for “The Relationship Between Corporate Board of Directors and IPO Performance.”
Whittenburg Appointed to Fulbright Committee; Joint Articles Accepted
Accountancy Professor Gene Whittenburg was recently one of 12 experts in his field from the U.S. to be appointed on the 2006-2007 Business Administration IB Peer Review Committee for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program, part of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
Whittenburg has also had two articles accepted: “Determining Innocence In Innocent-Spouse Court Cases Using Logit/Probit Analysis,” co-authored by I. Horowitz and W. Raabe, has been accepted by Advances in Taxation. “Indicators of a Problem Client,” was accepted by Taxes and is co-authored by W. Raabe and Martha Doran, professor of Accountancy at SDSU.
Song Article Published
Professor of Finance Moon H. Song’s article, “Corporate Governance and Asset Sales: The Effect of Internal and External Control Mechanisms,” has been accepted by Financial Review. The article was co-authored with R. Hanson.
Ryan Attends Annual IABS Meeting; Installed as President
Associate Professor of Management Lori Verstegen Ryan was installed as President of the International Association of Business and Society on March 24 at the organization’s annual conference in Merida, Mexico. This 15-month post is her fourth in the organization’s five-year officer cycle. While at the conference, Ryan led an all-morning workshop on Corporate Governance Research, chaired a Corporate Governance paper session and presented the paper, “Corporate Governance in Brazil and the United States.”
As an H.B. Earhart Fellow in Economics, she has also been invited to a small fellows gathering in Boston in July. The featured guest will be Nobel prize-winning economist Gary S. Becker.
Marketing Professors Publish Article
Marketing professors Matt Aistrich, Massoud Saghafi and Don Sciglimpaglia published an article titled, “Has European Unification Lived Up to Expectations?” in the European Business Forum, the magazine of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS). In the article, they compare the realities of marketing in the EU to the expectations managers had before unification.
Sciglimpaglia Presents Papers and Publishes Article
Marketing Professor Don Sciglimpaglia has presented various papers within the past year. “Minidorms for Upperclassmen: A Teaching Case,” co-authored with accountancy professors Nathan Oestreich and Howard Toole, was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Mountain Plains Management Conference in Cedar City, Utah, in 2005. Also in 2005, “Parmatek, Inc: What to Do With the Hot Rod Chemistry Kit,” co-authored with Marketing Professor Sara Appleton-Knapp, was presented at the annual meeting of Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along with marketing professor Massoud Saghafi, the two will present “Social Responsibility at the Level of the Small to Mid-Size Business; Corruption in Global Markets and it’s Impact on Company Strategy and Practice” at the 35th EMAC Conference in Athens, Greece, in May 2006. In March, Sciglimpaglia presented “The Role of Post Transaction History on Customer Satisfaction in Online Shopping” at the International Academy of E-Business, Orlando.
Additionally, Sciglimpaglia’s article, “Consumer Account Relationships and E-Retail Banking,” co-authored with Finance Professor David Ely, is currently in press for the Journal of Financial Services Marketing.
Flatley Selected as Outstanding Business Educator
IDS Professor Marie Flatley has been selected as the 2005-2006 Outstanding Business Educator for the Senior College/Collegiate/University level by the California Business Education Association (CBEA) Board of Directors. The Awards Luncheon was held at the CBEA State Conference in Monterey on April 8.
Chow Articles Accepted
Professor of Accountancy Chee Chow has had several articles accepted for publication: “Enhancing Knowledge Sharing in Public Accounting Firms,” co-authored with Joanna Ho (UC-Irvine) and Sandra Vera-Muoz (Notre Dame), for Accounting Horizons; “Towards Understanding Chinese Auditors Structuring of Audit Approaches, Client Acceptance Decisions, Risk Assessment and Stringency of Imposed Reporting Standards” in the Journal of International Accounting Research with Joanna Ho and Phyllis Mo (Hong Kong Polytechnic University); and “The Use and Usefulness of Non-financial Performance Measures,” co-authored with Wim Van der Stede (USC), for Management and Accounting Quarterly and “Current Management Accounting Practice in the People’s Republic of China” will appear in C.S. Chapman, A.G. Hopwood and M.D. Shields (Eds.) Handbook of Management Accounting Research, co-authored with Rong-Ruey Duh (National Taiwan University) and Jason Xiao (Cardiff University).
Chow has also had two papers accepted to be presented at the 2006 American Accounting Association Western Regional Meeting in Portland, Oregon in April. “How Well Can Publication of an Article in a Top Accounting Journal be used as a Proxy for its Contribution?” co-authored with Management Professor Gangaram Singh, Finance Professor Kamal Haddad and Anne Wu (National Chengchi University, Taiwan) and “Exploring the Facilitators and Inhibitors of Knowledge Sharing in Audit Engagements,” co-authored with Joanna Ho and Sandra Munoz.
“Can Publication of an Article in a Top Management Journal be used as a Proxy for its Contribution?” co-authored with Singh as lead author and Finance Professor Kamal Haddad, has also been accepted for presentation at the 2006 Academy of Management Annual Meeting to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in August.
Chow also has been appointed an associate of Cardiff Business School (UK) and serveson the dissertation committee of a PhD student at Cardiff University.
Executive and Specialized Programs Office Hires Two Assistant Directors
The Executive and Specialized Programs department has hired two new assistant directors. Pelema Morrice has been named Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for Executive and Specialized Programs and Bridget Frattalone is Assistant Director of Special Events.

Morrice will be responsible for the marketing, admissions and recruitment efforts for all new students interested in programs offered through the Executive and Specialized Programs office, including the MBA for Executives program, the Sports Business Management MBA program, and the Executive Financial Planner certificate program.
Frattalone will be responsible for both EMBA and Sports MBA Orientation and Graduation; EMBA's newly created Executive Speaker Series and Sports MBA Colloquium Speaker Series; EMBA's annual trip to Tijuana, Mexico and annual trip to Asia; creating and coordinating four-to-five annual EMBA alumni activities; Sports MBA alumni activities; and assisting the CBA with various events.
Randel To Be Published in Creativity Research Journal
Management Assistant Professor Amy Randel, co-authored with Jaussi, K.S., & Dionne, S.D. “I Am, I Think I Can, and I Do: The Role of Personal Identity, Self-Efficacy, and Cross-Application of Experiences in Creativity at Work,” which will appear in an upcoming issue of Creativity Research Journal.
Also, Randel was a panel member in the Western Academy of Management Doctoral Consortium on March 29-30, 2006 in Long Beach.
Lynn Shore Presents at National Conference
On May 4, Professor of Management Lynn Shore will be participating in Nanyang Technological University’s Cultural Intelligence Conference. Held in Dallas, Texas, the conference’s theme is “Cultural Intelligence (CQ): Managing Diversity Within and Across Cultures” and will emphasize capabilities for success in situations characterized by diversity. The session will consist of attendees construing diversity broadly to include both surface (visible) and deep (invisible) aspects of diversity. They will also consider diversity within cultures and diversity across cultures. Shore will conduct a presentation on Summary and Integration. |
