Brown Featured on American
Real Estate Society Panel

Roger Brown, Director of Research for the Real Estate and Land Use Institute, was a panelist on “Tools, Technology and Resources” at the 21 st annual American Real Estate Society (ARES) meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico on April 13-16. ARES is a society for high-level practicing professionals and real estate professors at colleges and universities throughout the world.

Brown spoke about Mathestate, a website tool he developed which allows the real estate investor to perform, via intuitive software, the most sophisticated analysis and to receive immediate answers on private investments.

Singh Cited in National Labor Law Newsletter

Gangaram Singh, chair of the Management Department, is cited in the February 23 issue of Labor Law Reports Insight for his study on the relationship between impasse procedures that have developed as a result of adjudication and collective bargaining strategy. With the assistance of Professor Ellen Dannin of Wayne State University Law School, Singh's study found that the doctrine of implementation on impasse significantly weakens unions and strengthens employers during negotiations for a collective agreement.  This defeats the purpose of the National Labor Relations Act, which is to promote an equal playing field for collective bargaining. 

 

Flatley Accepted into QUALCOMM Summer Program

Marie Flatley, professor of Information and Decision Systems, was accepted into the QUALCOMM Institute for Innovation and Educational Success’s PICT summer fellow program. The program is designed to assist faculty with technology inside the classroom. Qualcomm Education Initiative has provided stipends to approximately 20 participants.

Flatley’s current research interests involve using technology to assist with the communication process. She is investigating the effective use of blogs and text messaging for business as well as the effectiveness of other wireless technologies. She has published several articles and books on business communication.

 

Blake Is New Placement/Internship Director of HTM

The Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) program has named Brian P. Blake as the new placement, alumni and internship program director. Prior to joining SDSU, Blake was the vice president of operations for Trigild International, a San Diego-based management company specializing in the operations of hotels, restaurants, golf courses and theme parks throughout the United States.

Previously, he was the assistant General Manager at the Harbor Island Hilton and has worked for one of Europe’s leading hotel and restaurant companies, Trusthouse Forte. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Hotel Catering and Tourism Management from the University of Surrey and completed Management Development Training at Cornell University in New York.

Belch Addresses National Women’s Leadership Conference

Marketing professor Michael Belch was a featured speaker at the national Women’s Leadership Conference where he spoke about the purchasing power of women. Research has proven that women either buy or influence the purchase of 80% of all consumer goods and buy over 50% of all automobiles making them the dominant decision maker in many markets.

The conference was held at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort on April 13-14. It was presented in collaboration with Catalyst, the Center for Creative Leadership, and the Committee of 200. It was coordinated with the assistance of Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, Marriott, Pfizer, State Farm Insurance and UPS.

Jennex Addresses Air Force Conference on Knowledge Management, Receives Local Organizational Leadership Award

Murray Jennex, assistant professor in Information Systems Department (IDS), was the academic keynote speaker at an Air Force conference in Tucson, Arizona recently. Jennex presented research findings identifying critical factors for Knowledge Management (KM) success. He also moderated a panel addressing issues facing the Department of Defense and the Air Force in implementing systems for KM. “Knowledge Management is the process of collecting specific knowledge and using it to improve performance,” Jennex said. “It recycles knowledge so that decisions can be made more effectively.”

On May 17, Jennex was awarded the Organizational Leadership Award from the Information Resources Management Association for his effort and expertise in soliciting papers in the Information Technology Education Track and publicizing the IRMA 2005 International Conference. The award was presented to Jennex during the international conference in San Diego which drew over 400 participants. He also was co-chair of the conference’s Knowledge Management track with IDS colleague Theophilus Addo.

Sharon Lightner Named New Chair of Accounting Department

Sharon Lightner will become the new Director of the School of Accountancy, effective July 1.  Lightner has been a faculty member since 1977 and also earned her masters in accounting at SDSU.   She went on to get her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
 
Lightner teaches financial accounting at the graduate and undergraduate level, and has been named a three-time recipient of both the Most Outstanding Faculty Award in the School of Accountancy and the Most Influential Professor by the outstanding graduating senior in Accountancy.  Additionally, she has been faculty advisor to both the MSA professional track students and Beta Alpha Psi, honored as the outstanding faculty advisor on campus (Aztec Achievement Award) and one of the six Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisors nationally in 1995-96 to receive the Arthur Andersen Richard E. Claire Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. 

She received the AICPA/AAA Collaboration Award for her development of an international accounting class offered in real time to students in four countries.  She has shared her expertise and applications of technology via numerous presentations and has been published in respected journals including Journal of Accountancy, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Journal of Accounting Education, and The Practical Accountant.
 
”The School of Accountancy was unanimous in their support of Sharon’s desire to lead the program as it strives to be one of the nation’s finest,” said Dean Gail Naughton. “I am sure we will see great things from Sharon as she takes on the leadership role for her department.”

Ryan Chairs International Conference, Is Published In Business & Society and Joins Academy of Management Review Board

Management faculty member and Director of Research for the Corporate Governance Institute Lori Verstegen Ryan chaired the 16 th annual conference of the International Association for Business and Society in April.   More than 150 registrants from 16 countries explored issues related to such topics as business ethics, stakeholder theory, corporate social responsibility, and corporate governance.   The formal program consisted of a plenary panel, five symposia, nine workshops, 14 discussion sessions, and 68 papers. “It was probably one of the biggest service experiences I’ll ever have,” Ryan said.

An article by Ryan was published in the March 2005 issue of Business & Society.  The article, entitled “Corporate Governance and Business Ethics in North America:  The State of the Art," was based on a report Ryan made to the World Congress of the International Society for Business, Economics, and Ethics in Melbourne last summer.  She found that, while the U.S. shares certain corporate governance characteristics with its two NAFTA neighbors, a variety of cultural, legal, and economic factors make the three systems distinct. 

Ryan also joined the nationally recognized Academy of Management Review Board (AMR) because of her outstanding leadership in the field of management.   The AMR is a scholarly journal for the organizational sciences and reviews conceptual papers that advance the science and practice of management.

Saghafi Joins International Review Board

Marketing professor Massoud Saghafi joined the international Industrial Marketing Management Board because of his outstanding work in the field of marketing. The board reviews articles for the International Journal of Marketing for Industrial and High-Tech Firms . They review in-depth case studies geared to the needs of marketing managers, executives and professors.

Saghafi specializes in international business and marketing in the Asian markets. He also focuses on pricing strategy, and telecommunications management. Saghafi has been published in academic journals, industry and trade publications and has contributed to popular periodicals. 

Russell will Publish New Articles in Prestigious Journals

Two new articles will be published by marketing professor, Cristel Russell. One article entitled “Consumer, Characters and Products: A Balanced Model of Sitcom Product Placement Effects” will be published in the Journal of Advertising . The other article, “Vulnerable Women on Screen and at Home: Soap Opera Consumption” will be published in the Journal of Macromarketing .

The main focus of the Journal of Advertising is research dealing with the economic, political, social, and environmental aspects of advertising, and methodological advances.

The Journal of Macromarketing examines important social issues, economic issues and management problems.
