College of Business Undertakes Strategic Planning Process
The College of Business is currently working to develop
a strategic plan that will help address the needs of the San Diego
business community and ensure its strong tradition of developing
leaders to fuel the economy of the region. A steering committee,
comprised of six elected faculty from the College, a staff representative,
the Dean and Associate Dean, was formed to oversee and implement
the process.
Work began during the Summer of 2003 when three members of the Steering
Committee attended an AACSB (the Colleges accrediting organization)
workshop on strategic planning in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then,
the Committee has developed a timeline and parameters to guide the
planning process.
In Fall 2004, a two-day retreat was held to review the Colleges
strengths and weaknesses and set strategic goals and direction.
Guest speakers included Yash Gupta, Dean at USCs College of
Business, who spoke on the topic of Business School Opportunities
and How to Take Advantage of Them. Kelly Cunningham, Chief
Economist for the City of San Diego, gave an overview of the Future
of Business in San Diego and Duane Roth, Chairman and CEO
of Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp. and Chair of the Colleges
Board of Directors discussed the Boards views of the
College and Its Future.
Task forces were subsequently added to further advance
and integrate strategic plans for the undergraduate program, the
graduate program, self-supporting programs, faculty issues and organizational
structure. Staff members are meeting now to add their goals and
action items to the plan.
This Spring, summary reports of all faculty and staff efforts will
be reviewed, shared and updated. A College-wide retreat is being
planned to share the work done thus far, celebrate the accomplishments
and set the momentum for accomplishing the goals.
