I earned my undergraduate degree at an institution outside of the U.S., but I was instructed in English. Do I need to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

Degree Programs

Does SDSU offer part-time graduate business programs to accommodate working professionals?
Yes. Students may choose to attend the SDSU on either a part-time or full-time basis. Part-time students generally take two classes each semester. Class schedules are arranged in order to meet the needs of students who can only attend courses during the evening hours. Previous class schedules can be found at: www.sdsu.edu/schedule. The degree program can be completed in two to four years on a part-time basis depending on the previous coursework of the individual student.

When do the SDSU graduate business programs begin? Can students begin their studies in any semester?
The application period for the Fall 2010 semester begins October 1 and ends February 1. Because of an unprecedented reduction in the 2009-2010 support budget, San Diego State University and other California State University campuses will not accept any admission applications for the 2010 and 2011 Spring semesters.

Is it possible to transfer to a graduate business program at SDSU from another institution?
Yes, however transfer students may only transfer up to twelve semester units from an AACSB-accredited institution when they enter the SDSU business program. Any additional coursework that may have been completed at the previous institution will not be credited toward the degree program at SDSU. Also, any coursework completed at a non-AACSB accredited institution will not transfer to SDSU’s graduate business programs. Please note transfer credit is subject to review by the Graduate Business Programs office at SDSU and may require you to provide full course descriptions and/or syllabi before credit is given for previous coursework. Credit for previous coursework is not guaranteed.

How do employers view the MBA vs. MSBA?
Both programs are considered graduate level business degrees. The MSBA is a more specialized degree whereas the MBA is a more general degree.

Does SDSU offer online or distance learning graduate business programs?
No. SDSU does not offer distance or online learning for the graduate business programs.

Does SDSU School of Business offer PhD programs?
No, the SDSU School of Business does not currently offer any PhD programs.

How do students waive out of core classes?
After students are admitted to SDSU, they may request that one or more core course requirements for their degree program be waived. Core course waivers for the MBA and MSBA programs are granted if an equivalent course was taken at an AACSB-accredited institution in the last five years and the student received a grade of ‘B’ or better. For the MBA and MSBA programs, equivalent courses taken at non-AACSB accredited institutions are reviewed on a case by case basis. Core courses for the MSA program are reviewed on a case by case basis and students must have successfully passed an equivalent course in order for the requirement to be waived.

Do students have to choose a concentration, specialization or track?
MBA students may pursue a specialization but are not required to do so. MSBA students are required to choose a concentration and work with their faculty advisor to develop a program of study. MSA students must choose one of the tracks and work with their faculty advisor to develop a program of study under the chosen track.

The application period for the Fall 2010 semester begins October 1 and ends February 1. Because of an unprecedented reduction in the 2009-2010 support budget, San Diego State University and other California State University campuses will not accept any admission applications for the 2010 and 2011 Spring semesters.

Do I have a better chance of being admitted if I apply early in the application period?
You should apply as early as you can. The MBA program, in particular, often reaches capacity prior to the end of the application period. Please plan accordingly and submit your completed application materials well ahead of the application deadline.

Does SDSU require applicants to have work experience before applying?
SDSU does not require applicants to have work experience before they apply. However, graduate business studies are enhanced for students who have real-world experiences to apply course concepts to.

I earned my undergraduate degree from SDSU. Does this enhance my chances for being accepted?
No preference is given to students who graduated from SDSU. All students are assessed on the same basis.

Does SDSU have a minimum GPA? What is the average GPA?
The minimum cumulative GPA to be considered for admittance is 2.85 for domestic students and 3.0 for international students. The average GPA for students admitted to our programs is 3.3. If a domestic student’s cumulative GPA is deficient, SDSU will calculate the GPA for the student’s last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units. There are no exceptions to the GPA minimum for international students. Note that students who meet the minimum GPA requirements are not guaranteed admittance.

Do I need to submit community college transcripts and/or transcripts from other institutions I attended, even though they are indicated on the University transcripts I graduated from?
Yes. You need to submit transcripts from all institutions that you have attended. The exception is that if you graduated from SDSU, you do not need to submit transcripts.

How do I find out the status of my application?
You can check the status of your application accessing the web portal (www.sdsu.edu/e-services). After all of an applicant’s materials have been received by SDSU, an admissions decision can take in excess of two months to complete.

Can I submit materials, such as GMAT and TOEFL scores, after the application deadline?
You must have taken the GMAT and TOEFL exams prior to the application deadline. GMAT and TOEFL scores will be accepted after the application deadline only if the test(s) were taken before the deadline. In addition, late applications will not be evaluated.

Does SDSU conduct admission interviews?
No. SDSU does not interview prospective students for any of our graduate business programs.
