Admissions Criteria
To be considered for admission to SDSU, Graduate applicants must meet the minimum CSU eligibility requirements and SDSU requirements listed in the Graduate Bulletin as well as the admission requirements for the specific Graduate Business Program.
Admission to the SDSU Graduate Business Programs is highly competitive. Applications are reviewed for applicant academic and career achievements, individual intellectual capability, and the potential for long-term success in the field of business. The following are the criteria upon which admission decisions are based.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
San Diego State University requires domestic graduate applicants to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.85 and international graduate applicants to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on the U.S. 4.0 scale to be admitted with classified graduate standing. All transcripts from domestic and international institutions will be reviewed and converted to the U.S. 4.0 scale before they are evaluated. Questions regarding calculation of GPAs should be directed to the Graduate Admissions office after the prospective student has applied to the SDSU Business programs. Transcripts will not be reviewed until after a student has applied.
GMAT Scores
The SDSU Graduate School of Business does not have a minimum GMAT score requirement, however the average score for admitted students is 600. Successful applicants perform well on all three parts of the exam: verbal, quantitative, and writing.
TOEFL or IELTS Score
All students, regardless of citizenship, whose preparatory education was principally in a language of instruction other than English must demonstrate competence in English. Those who do not possess a bachelor's degree from a post secondary institution where English is the principal language must take either the TOEFL or IELTS. Students who choose to take the TOEFL must receive a minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer based), or 80 (Internet based). Students who choose to take the IELTS must receive a minimum score of 6.5 to be considered admissible.
Resume
Although work experience is not required for admission, professional work experience will be considered for those applicants who provide the SDSU Graduate School of Business with a resume.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation from managers and/or professors who are familiar with a prospective student’s work serve to strengthen the student’s application. The insight of these third parties give the SDSU Admissions team another valuable perspective on the student’s capabilities and potential that may not have otherwise been derived from the student’s documents.
Statement of Purpose
The information an applicant provides in the Statement of Purpose gives the SDSU admissions team the opportunity to understand an applicant’s motivation for pursuing a graduate degree and how the degree will advance his or her toward career goals. For recommendations on writing an effective statement of purpose download Career Services' Guide to Writing a Statement of Intent.
