Sharon M. Lightner, Ph.D., CPA
William E. Cole Director, School of Accountancy, San Diego State University
Sharon Lightner is the William E. Cole Director, School of Accountancy. She has taught financial accounting at the graduate and undergraduate level. She is a three time recipient of the Most Outstanding Faculty Award in the School of Accountancy and has been selected the Most Influential Professor by the Most Outstanding Accounting Student on three separate occasions. She received an Aztec Achievement Award at SDSU for the outstanding faculty advisor on campus and was selected as one of the six Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisors nation wide to receive a 1995-1996 Arthur Andersen Richard E. Claire Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award.
She was a recipient of the AICPA/AAA Collaboration Award for her development of an international accounting class that was offered in real time to students in four countries. She has shared her applications of technology via numerous presentations and publications. Other awards and honors include:
- Named 2007 Educator of the Year by the American Women’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA)
- Elected to serve on the board of directors for Beta Alpha Psi, 2008
- Currently serves on the San Diego chapter boards of the Financial Executives International (FEI) and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA)
- Serves on the state Accounting Education Committee of CalCPA
Her degrees include a Bachelor of Science from the University of Montana, a Master of Science from San Diego State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oregon. She has published in Journal of Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, and The Practical Accountant
