Jay S. Kunin, Ph.D.
Lecturer, Management Department

Jay Kunin teaches “Strategic Management of Technology & Innovation” at SDSU.  He has had a 30-year career as an entrepreneur, executive, consultant and investor.  He has also taught in MIT’s EECS department, at the University of Denver’s Business School, and at UCSD Extension. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Tech Coast Angels, where he is VP of the BioMed Track.  He has served on the Boards of Directors of numerous privately-funded entrepreneurial firms, and is also a founding Board Member of the Life Sciences I.T. Global Institute and is a member of the Advisory Board of the ITT Technical Institute’s School of Business.  He has served as a senior consultant to the International Centre for Entrepreneurship in Auckland and Incubators New Zealand (NZ Ministry of Eco­nomic Development), where he has lectured on early-stage capital formation and angel investing.  He has also served as a Visiting Fellow with the Australian Institute for Commericalisation.

Jay has been President of BenSoft, Inc., a software firm in Consumer-Directed Healthcare, which was acquired by a public company in 2008.  He co-founded and served as President of RxSys International, a producer of electronic products for the pharmaceutical industry, which he led through an IPO in 1988. He was a principal of Securities Industry Software Corp., where he served as VP of Inter­na­tional Business when the company was acquired by Citicorp.  He was later Director of I.T. at Scios, Inc., a public biopharmaceutical company now owned by J&J.  He has also been VP of Engineering for several startup software companies in the financial and Internet industries, and CIO for three firms in the biotech and clinical trials business.

Jay has been a consultant in management, financing and business development for technology-based com­panies, currently focusing on medical and pharmaceutical Information Technology and regulatory compliance. He began his consulting career as a practice manager with Hammer & Co., Inc., a business process re-engineering and technology strategy firm, where his clients included large financial, manufacturing, health-care and technol­ogy companies in the US, Europe and Latin America. He holds a BS in Physical Sciences and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT, where he did original research that led to Business Process Re-Engineering.  He has also completed the Corporate Directors training program at UCLA Anderson School/UCSD Rady School.
