Marie Flatley, Ph.D.
Professor of Management Information Systems

Dr. Marie E. Flatley teaches courses in business communication in the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University. She received her B.B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. In addition, she has done post-graduate study in AACSB sponsored programs at the University of Minnesota and Indiana University.

She is active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Business Communication, California Business Education Association, Delta Pi Epsilon, and the National Business Education Association. She has served as Associate Editor for the Journal for Business Communication and Editor for the NABTE Review. She is a Distinguished Member of the Association of Business Communication and is currently serving as its Past President. She has served as chair of the Delta Pi Epsilon Research Awards Committee, and currently she is on the editorial board for the Delta Pi Epsilon Journal. In addition, she has been section editor for the Communication and Information Technology sections of the Business Education Forum, and she is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Education for Business.

Her current research interests involve using technology to assist with the communication process. She is investigating the effective use of text messaging for business as well as the effectiveness of wireless technologies. She has published several articles and books on business communication. Her most recent article is an overview of the concepts and applications of text messaging in the Business Education Forum (April 2004). And her most recent book co-authored with Ray Lesikar is Basic Business Communication: Skills for Empowering the Internet Generation, 10th edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2005.
