Dr. James Beatty Awarded Faculty Monty for 2011

Jim with Monty Award

Management information systems professor, Dr. James Beatty, was named the 2011 recipient of SDSU’s Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributor from the College of Business Administration. The award, known as the “Faculty Monty”, was presented to Beatty during the annual All-University Convocation on August 25, 2011.

The Faculty Monty is a prestigious honor given annually to one faculty member from each of SDSU’s seven colleges and the Imperial Valley campus and to one employee at the SDSU library.

Beatty is the College’s most senior professor, having served in the management and MIS departments since 1973. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Northern Colorado the same year.  He is also one of the most recognized professors at SDSU with numerous awards and honors including:

• Outstanding Executive MBA Professor in 1995, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
• Nominated by SDSU for U.S. Professor of the Year in 2001 and 2003.
• Outstanding Overall Faculty Contribution to the College of Business, 1996 and 2004.
• SDSU Senate Excellence in Teaching Award for 2000 – 2001.
• His first Faculty Monty, presented in 1984.

“Dr. Jim Beatty’s 38 years of contributions to the College of Business have been immense and impactful,” said Dr. Michael Cunningham, dean of the College. “His outstanding research, leadership, teaching and mentoring of junior faculty along with his willingness to generously serve the College in numerous capacities has left a legacy that is an inspiration for all faculty, staff and students.”

Part of Beatty’s success can be traced to the respect he has earned from his students. They have said of Beatty: “He is very passionate in helping his students succeed. I highly recommend this teacher!”; “Most dedicated professor I've ever had; he is very methodical and has a natural teaching ability.”; “Best professor I have ever had at State - very intelligent man, but very approachable.”

Beatty has also served on the national board of examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for 12 of the past 13 years. The Baldrige program began in 1987 as an act of Congress under the Department of Commerce and is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He has attained the rank of senior/alumni examiner, acts as a coach/mentor for new Baldrige examiners and is an ambassador for the program.
