Semester at Sea
Dr. Richard O. Dalbey (Information and Decision Systems) returns to SDSU this semester after having been selected as a faculty member for the Spring 2008 Semester at Sea program. The 109-day around the world voyage with 740 students from some 250 universities and colleges across the country took place aboard the MV Explorer. Approximately half of the semester was spent at sea while the remaining days were used for visiting 15 countries where students were required to complete a certain number of hours of fieldwork related to their courses.
Dalbey taught three different three-credit courses in business communication and international business and developed and led in-country field trips for courses taught. He participated in the required Global Studies interdisciplinary "core" course and presented lectures and panel discussions on Brazil to the entire shipboard community on the voyage from Puerto Rico to Brazil. He also volunteered to host non-credit programs and seminars to the ship's community college and senior adult members, and "non-student" lifelong learner participants.
Since 1963, over 46,000 students have studied abroad with Semester at Sea and its predecessor programs.
