Students taking Management 465 (Labor Relations) this semester have been assigned a case study where student teams study the collective bargaining process. In one respect, it is a typical case study where students break in to teams representing management and a labor union and they negotiate. But these students are operating with an advantage: Team Teaching where two instructors with different areas of experience guide students through the process. Professor Dr. Gangaram Singh is the academic. He lends students the expertise from the research and critical thinking standpoint. Lecturer Stephen Cushman is the real-world businessman. He comes with experience in working with labor unions and running his own business, the Cush Automotive Group. "We provide students the best of both worlds--education and day-to-day business," said Cushman. This case study pits students representing organized workers at a fictional Minneapolis hotel bargaining with hotel management. Together, Cushman and Singh have embellished a text book case study with real-world bargaining chips for both sides to work through by using their respective expertise. The team teaching approach has given the students additional resources to draw on, making for a more realistic experience. “Teaching is so much more fun to have a reality check with Mr Cushman in the room,” Singh pointed out. “I am learning too!” |
