Former CBA Dean, Allan Bailey Retires from SDSU
Dr. Allan R. Bailey (’64, accounting) has been affiliated with SDSU since 1960, when he first became a student pursuing his bachelor’s degree. With the exception of the few years that he spent at UCLA earning his graduate degrees, he has been with SDSU ever since.
In 1968, Bailey returned to SDSU as an assistant professor in the School of Accountancy. He rose through the ranks to become the longest-serving dean of the College of Business Administration, from 1970 to 1997. During his tenure as dean, Bailey was instrumental in attaining national accreditation for the School of Accountancy – one of the first university accounting programs in the state of California to do this.
As CBA dean, it was Bailey who oversaw the establishment of one of the nation’s first federally funded Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at SDSU, the Entrepreneurial Management Center (EMC) and the nationally-ranked International Business degree program.
After his retirement from CBA, Bailey served as interim vice president of University Relations and Development and then helped to found and serve as chief financial officer of the Campanile Foundation, which serves to increase private funding to the university.
Even in retirement, Bailey’s presence will still be felt. At Bailey’s retirement party on October 23, 2008, it was announced that Mark McMillin (’79, marketing), CEO of the Corky McMillin Companies had provided funding that would allow the naming of the library in the new Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center to be named in Bailey’s honor.
