OUTSIDE THE BOX

It would be an injustice to say that my work is inside any box, but you get what I mean by the section, I hope. This is the part of me that isn't defined by work, the things I do in the remaining hour of the 24 hour day when I am not working.

Mommy & Me

Anyone with kids can tell you... get as much sleep now while you're free from the horror of 3AM feedings, 6AM crying wake-up calls, or the one I'm currently dealing with ... "I'm hungry, where's breakfast." But they're funny as all heck (and heck is pretty darn funny) so we tend to keep them around, if only for the laugh.

My 4-year old daughter made me promise that I would live with her forever. So all of you who read this are witness to my commitment to stick with my munchkin for as long as I live - which could be short when she realizes death is the only way to shake me.

Going the Distance

Akin to a Forrest Gump moment, one day I decided I should run and I haven't stop running since. I've run two marathons and I can't say I'm ready to stop, although in the height of training, sometimes I wonder what I'm doing. But this is more than just distance running, I thoroughly enjoy any physical activity that requires me to ask myself... "what the hell are you doing?" This includes bungee jumping, sky diving, lots of hiking, and playing any and all sports whether I'm good at it or not. I prefer sports where my bullish attack nature would give me the edge - I've decided that finesse is not my strong point.

Books you should read because I said so
  • Childhood's End, Arthur C. Clark
  • Dune,Frank Herbert
  • A Short History of Everything, Bill Bryson
  • The Professor and the Madman, Simon Winchester

Cool Things

I love to get a perspective of our existence by looking at this radius of the universe. Our time is so amazingly short in the grand scheme of things and yet it's hard not to imagine our single existence to be the most monumental occurance.

All of my friends are nerds of one flavor or another (which is a huge compliment my friends), but they also have interesting and eclectic hobbies. I definitely appreciate them opening up their worlds to me, and letting me have a glimpse of a life that is not my own.

These are two pieces by the mysterious (because the public does not know who he is) British graffiti artist BANKSY. I love his work... guess I should marry it. If you need to put a smirk on your face, you should check out www.banksy.co.uk.

Thanks Jake for turning me on :)

Just finished reading...

Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzalez

Quotes I like:

"The word 'experienced' often refers to someone who's gotten away with doing the wrong thing more frequently than you have."

"Rescue will come as a welcome interruption of ... the survival voyage." - Dougal Robertson (lost at sea for 38 days)

"There is an old Zen story about a young man who passionately wants to become a master swordsman. He goes to the Kundo master and begs to be taught, but the master puts him to work in the garden instead. Every time the student isn't looking, the master sneaks up behind him and whacks him with a stick. The student is terribly frustrated, and this goes on for months, then years. No matter what the student does, he can't seem to sense when the master is behind him, and he is constantly covered with bruises. But then one day, the student is in the garden, as usual, hoeing and weeding, and the master sneaks up behind him. He swings. The student ducks. The master misses. The student is overjoyed. He leaps up and shouts, 'Now will you teach me swordsmanship?' ... 'Now you don't need swordsmanship,' the master says."

"I WANT TO DIE IN MY SLEEP LIKE MY GRANDFATHER. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car." - fighter pilot humor

Thanks Han for always sending me interesting tidbits, comics, articles, and what-have-yous. This one I thought was particularly neat-o.

“By then I knew that everything good and bad left an emptiness when it stopped. But if it was bad, the emptiness filled up by itself. If it was good you could only fill it by finding something better.”
