Join us for the 3rd Annual SDSU Arusha Peace Institute, Conflict Resolution in East Africa. The course will take place 22 May-11 June 2011. Students can earn three units of SDSU Credit in ISCOR 450 or General Studies 450.

The Arusha Peace Institute is a Study Abroad program offered by SDSU’s International Security and Conflict Resolution Program (ISCOR) in cooperation with the College of Extended Studies. It has the approval of San Diego State University and the Office of the Chancellor, California State University. All participants will earn SDSU resident credits upon successful completion of the program.

The program activities are located in Arusha, a city in the northern highlands of Tanzania where some of Africa’s most important peace treaties have been signed. Known as the “Geneva of Africa,” Arusha is the headquarters for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UN-ICTR), the African Union Court for Human and People’s Rights (AUCHPR), and the East African Community (EAC).

The course focuses on local conflicts around land, ethnicity and religion in East Africa. We will examine the use of both traditional and endogenous conflict resolution programs in the region including the use of ad-hoc United Nations tribunals.

Students will visit the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR) where they will observe genocide trials in progress, tour the library and court facilities and interview human rights attorneys.
