Course Content

The course focuses on local conflicts around land, ethnicity and religion in East Africa. We will examine the use of both traditional and endogenous conflict resolution programs in the region including the use of ad-hoc United Nations tribunals. Case studies will include the Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The students will then visit the Swahili, Maasai and Chagga communities and observe their traditional conflict resolution techniques and how they are adapting to the rapid urbanization, tourism and modernization in the region.

Lectures planned on topics such as:

  • Assessing local capacities for peace.

  • Strategies for building local democracies for sustainable peace.

  • The role of advocacy in peace building and conflict management.
