Office of Historic Preservation

The California Historic Resource Information System (CHRIS) is the name given to the system which manages all the historic (cultural) resource information for the state of California. Historic resources include both archaeological site data and historical built structure information. The purpose of CHRIS is 1) to provide archival curation of information on historical resources; 2) to assure that preservation standards for cultural resources as established by the National Park Service are implemented; and 3) to provide a wide range of information services to the historic preservation clients. This system assures standardization in the recordation of historic resources as well as continuity in service to historic preservation clients. CHRIS operates through 12 Information Centers in California and the Office of Historic Preservation in Sacramento. CHRIS is in the process of becoming electronically based, through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) documentation of all maps, imaging of site forms and reports, and establishment of computerized data bases for both archaeological and historical data bases.

The National Archeological Database, Reports module, is an expanded bibliographic inventory of over 350,000 reports on archeological investigation and planning.  This "gray literature" represents a large portion of the primary information available on archaeological sites in the U.S.

The San Diego County Archaeological Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational corporation dedicated to the study and preservation of the archaeological and anthropological heritage of San Diego County and contiguous areas.
