View the April 2011 newsletter (.pdf) *************************************************** EventsCommencement 2011The Department of Anthropology commencement ceremony will be held May 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. in Arts and Letters, Room 201. We invite all students, faculty, alumni, and their families to celebrate the graduating class of 2011. The ceremony should last approximately one hour and will be followed by a reception with complimentary food and drinks in the Arts and Letters courtyard. Students that are interested can then proceed to The College of Arts and Letters commencement ceremony, starting at 1 p.m. at Viejas Arena. We hope you are able to join us for both events as we congratulate the graduates and wish them well in their future endeavors! Read more at SDSU's official commencement site... *************************************************** Department of Anthropology's final speaker series event of the semester"Race, Biology, and Culture: Rethinking the Connections" by Dr. Clarence Gravlee, University of Florida (UF) The central goal of Gravlee’s research is to identify and address the social and cultural causes of racial inequalities in health. He takes a biocultural approach to health and human development, drawing on methods and theory from the social and biological sciences. Gravlee’s current primary project, funded by NSF and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at UF, focuses on the health effects of racism among African Americans in Tallahassee, FL. DETAILS *************************************************** Department of Anthropology's next speaker series event“Backyard Anthropology: Finding and Solving Local Problems” by Dr. Ana Pitchon, Cal State-Dominguez Hills Dr. Pitchon is an applied environmental anthropologist. She specializes on marine and coastal policy, and has worked on various contracts for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the European Union. Her current research focuses on the evaluation of coastal resource use, dependency, and resilience in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles County.
