International Consulting

My international consulting experience dates back to the 1970s when I was Director of the American Language Institute. During that period, I conducted workshops in various countries while I recruited students for the institute.

Formal consulting for various official agencies (e.g, the Asia Foundation, United States Information Service (USIS), and the U.S. Department of State) began after 1984, when I secured a tenure-track faculty position at San Diego State University .

From that time on, I have consulted, conducted workshops, or given keynotes or plenaries almost every year. Here's the time-line for those activities:

Egypt: 1984, Addressing an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Conference (plenary); ESP Program Evaluation (USIS)

Pakistan: 1987, ESP Program Evaluation: (Asia Foundation)

Cyprus (for American University in Beirut): 1988, Seminar for Teachers on Academic Reading (Soros Foundation).

Yugoslavia:1989, Addressing an ESP conference (plenary); workshops on academic reading and teacher training (USIS).

Morocco: 1991, Conducting an ESP seminar for post-secondary faculty and secondary school inspectors (USIS).

Chile: 1991, Addressing an ESP conference (plenary); workshops for teachers (USIS).

Algeria: 1991, ESP program evaluation (USIS).

Spain: 1992, Teaching two courses for the Mediterranean Institute for International Teachers (Barcelona). (University of London/Columbia University)

Italy: 1993, Seminar on project work for ESP teachers (tourism and hotel management) (USIS).

Singapore: 1993, Seminar on writing portfolios for curriculum and assessment (Singapore Tertiary English Teachers' Society)

France: 1994, Presentation for secondary school teachers and inspectors (reading, writing, ESP) (USIS).

Egypt: 1994, Teachers workshops on reading, writing, and assessment. (American University in Cairo).

Russia: 1996, Workshop on content-based instruction for secondary school instructors (USIS).

Tunisia: 1997, Workshops for post-secondary instructors on reading and ESP syllabus design (USIS).

China: 1999, Addressing a conference for post-secondary teachers (topic: genre). (Hong Kong Polytechnic; Guangzhou University )

Lebanon: 2002, Teaching a class on TESOL methods. (Lebanese American University)

Hungary: 2003, Keynote at the European Teachers of Academic Writing Conference. Workshops at various universities and institutes. ( U.S. Department of State)

Lebanon : 2003, Plenary at the Language and Change, Regional Conference (plenary). (Lebanese American University)

Turkey: 2004, Plenary at a reading/writing conference, Bilkent University. Two-week seminar for university faculty on publishing internationally. ( U.S. Department of State)

South Africa : 2005, Keynotes at two applied linguistics conferences, SAALA and SAALT. (See "Professional Activities" for SAALA and SAALT keynotes.) Workshops for university and secondary faculty on academic reading and writing. ( U.S. Department of State)

South Africa: 2007 (May/June): Senior Fulbright (six weeks) at the University of Limpopo. Literacy curriculum design, assisting faculty to publish internationally (Fulbright, US. Department of State)

Turkey: 2007 (October): Assisting faculty to design objectives and produce reading/writing curricula for undergraduates. Sabanci University, Istanbul.

Mexico: 2008.(February) At the Autonomous University in Puebla (BUAP), working with secondary and post-secondary teachers to design a mentoring and observation document appropriate for teacher supervisors at both academic levels. (U.S. Department of State)

Jordan: 2008 (May). Plenary at an academic literacy conference, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)

Mexico: 2009. Conducting workshops on publishing internationally, BUAP/Puebla and University of Veracruz, Xalapa. Presented a plenary at the "First Colloquim on Research in Foreign Languages" (trans) at the University of Veracruz.

Lebanon: 2009 (June): Senior Fulbright (two weeks) at Antonine University. Design of English for Specific Purposes courses (Nursing, Engineering, Business, Sports Education...) at a number of proficiency levels. English for Academic Purposes Teacher Training for Lebanese Universities. [Follow-up curriculum design, December, 2009]

Taiwan: 2010 (April): Plenary, "Becoming an Effective ESP Teacher," at the International Conference on Language Education, Shi Chien University.

Mexico: 2010 (June): Conducting a week-long workshop on academic literacies in Hildago.
