Developmental Writing

One of my major teaching responsibilities throughout my career (1973-present) has been to teach developmental writing, academic reading and writing courses for university students who did not score well enough on the San Diego State University proficiency examination (the English Placement Test) to enroll in freshman composition. Serving on the curriculum committee for this course, I worked with others to design writing tasks and assessments. In 2011, I was asked to teach the language intensive section of the course in which bilingual and Generation 1.5 students were enrolled.

Freshman Success

From 1985-2009, I co-designed and taught in the Freshman Success Program, a learning communities program for first semester freshmen students. Over the years, many of the students have been local bilingual students, often first in their families to attend university.

Much of my research has been devoted to the literacy practices (reading and writing tasks) that these students are assigned across the curriculum during their first university years. Since 2002, I have been presented with opportunities to use my accumulated knowledge of students experiences in producing teaching and learning materials for secondary students, thus attempting to develop a better-prepared student body at my university and elsewhere.

American Language Institute

Having founded the ALI in 1973, I returned to it in 2010, where I have been teaching courses in advanced writing and GMAT (Graduate Management Test) preparation. A wonderful group of international Fulbright graduate students spent three "pre-academic" weeks at the ALI, during which time I was their advanced writing instructor, using, of course, the famous Swales and Feak textbook.

Teacher-Training/Graduate Classes

On my CV and under "International Consulting" can be found a number of other teaching responsibilities I have taken on: semester-long graduate classes (in English for Specific Purposes, Second/Foreign language reading and writing, materials development) at San Diego State and shorter classes for teachers and university faculty (e.g., writing research, developing portfolios) throughout the world.
