Led a considerable number of workshops and teacher training sessions for secondary and community colleges throughout my career. After 2004, these increased in number, particularly for AVID, the Sweetwater Union High School District, and community colleges in California. (See :"Domestic Consultancies.")

SDSU Teaching

 

2010- American Language Institute. GMAT and GRE preparation, advanced writing for graduate and undergraduate students. Writing and university preparation for international Fulbright students.

1973-

Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies (Academic Skills Center). Developmental writing for freshmen, graduate classes (Reading and writing rhetorically; Research in composition; genre and the teaching of composition.). Since retirement, teaching developmental writing on the SDSU campus for City College.

1985-2004

Freshman Success Learning Communities Program (academic writing…mentoring at Hoover High School ).

Other courses in DRWS: ESL writing, writing from sources, the teaching of composition in secondary schools.

 

1973-2002

Department of Linguistics

Theory and practice of ESL (for K-8 teachers), Materials development for language teachers, discourse analysis and the teaching of second language literacies, language assessment, research in second language reading and writing, genres and discourse communities.

University Service

 

  Directed the Center for Teaching and Learning and Writing-across-the-Curriculum Programs. Co-Directed the Freshman Success Program.

 

Served on all major committees in both academic departments, chairing several.

 

Served for eight years on the college promotion and tenure committee (and on seven other college committees)

 

Served for four years on the SDSU Academic Senate and on five other university committees
